Photos uncovered from the WTEN basement!
Updated February 5, 1998
I only recently was informed that Ted Knight began his television career in the very same station I have started mine (although I work there as a part time cameraman and tape-op as opposed to being on air). Naturally, I started to do some digging around as soon as I learned about this! Here is all I have to show for my efforts so far, although I will be content with this even if nothing else surfaces.
All of the pictures on this page currently are from the August 1986 story aired by WTEN upon his death. It is listed in the WTEN 1986 log as "Knight, Ted Obituary" and was in great condition on the library tape. Above is a photo from his time hosting "The Early Show," to the right a photo of his time as a ventriloquist. The story does not indicate if the photo was taken at Channel 10 or not.
This particular photo, according to the story, is of "Officer Ted." The other man in the photo is Gabby Hayes. I have also digitzed the audio of the story (one minute and forty two seconds) as an MP3 file (700k). It is not available in WAV format as it is too large. It contains a funny sound bite from MTM among other information.
My favorite photo of the group, this shows him as his stage name "Windy Knight," a person who introduced western movies on the air for Channel 10 in the years 1955-1957. I'm still very much looking for footage or pictures of him at the station, and I have one good hope left. While anything from his Windy Knight days will be almost impossible to find, Knight worked the CP Center telethons in Albany with Gavin MacLeod in the early 70s, and there is a possiblity some of this footage exists somewhere. I am told that since the telethon was on the air at 11:00 at night, Knight would do the local news Ted Baxter style and that it was hilarious to watch!
